What to Expect from a Dental Appointment

An annual dental cleaning and examination are vital to staying on top of your pet’s dental health. Oral problems may otherwise be missed because they are concealed below the gum line. Your pet will need to be fully sedated so our team can properly examine each tooth and check under the gums.

When you bring your pet in for a dental appointment at Yalesville Veterinary Hospital, here’s what to expect:

  • After performing pre-anesthetic blood work, your pet is placed under general anesthesia so we can perform a thorough exam, including full-mouth X-rays, and proceed with cleaning your pet’s teeth.
  • Your pet is closely monitored throughout the teeth cleaning to ensure their safety.
  • We will clean the teeth above and below the gum line and polish your pet’s teeth to smooth out their enamel and reduce plaque formation.
  • We also perform dental X-rays to check for hidden infections or damage, and to assess the mouth following a tooth extraction* to make sure the entire tooth root was removed.
  • Your pet will be sent home with our Dental Home Kit, which includes quality dental products to maintain healthy oral habits for your pet between appointments.

*Tooth extractions are only performed if absolutely needed, and we will contact you for approval before doing the extraction.
